Next, it’s that creature of legend, the werewolf.

The werewolf is a terrifying creature. In folklore, it is a person who shape-
shifts into a wolf or wolf-like creature. These monsters are said to be immortal
and therefore virtually impossible to kill. The process of transmogrification or
the transformation of man into beast usually take’s place during the appearance
of a full moon. The beast, which is typically much larger than any ordinary wolf,
is extremely powerful and dangerous. So beware of these monsters. They are
prone to violence!

The werewolf featured here is of course that fearsome creature from Tooth and
Claw. And believe me, it was scary. This monster has a fear factor that goes
off the scale. But what of the story itself - well, that was class! Location, script,
special effects, casting this was storytelling at it's very best.

The time travellers arrive in the highlands of Scotland during the reign of Queen Victoria. They are taken
to an old mansion - sitting nicely out there on the lonely moors. Immediately we feel that sense of isolation;
then we are introduced to a local legend about the existence of a terrifying monster... Somehow you just
know something bad is about to happen.

And we are not wrong. But how good was the the build up to that first encounter! The telling of an ancient
story about the manifestation of a werewolf, followed by the disappearance of children and the mutilation of
livestock, creates tension and expectation. Fans were left waiting, wondering when the fearful creature will
inevitably appear. Then we have that first encounter and no one is disappointed. We first see it is in the
shadows of the cellar. It is cloaked in darkness but its alien eyes give it away... Then moonlight streams
into the room, and the transformation begins… Clearly, this is no man dressed in a rubber suit this is the
werewolf!

For once, the special effect's department got it right. The monster's movements may be computer generated
but they are so life-like, we could be mistaken for believing we were watching actual video footage of a
chance encounter with the legendary beast. Anyone who has recently seen the Prisoner of Azkaban should
compare that werewolf with the werewolf from Tooth and Claw. There is only one winner. Doctor Who kicks
ass! Some of the action scenes in Tooth and Claw are spectacular. The sequence where the beast is
rampaging through the house is terrifying and as good as anything from the classic series. Next…
